GIS Analysis

Atlanta Micromobility Safety

Overview:

As part of my coursework for the Intro to GIS class, I conducted a comprehensive study on bicycle safety in risk zones within Midtown and Downtown Atlanta. Utilizing ArcGIS Pro, I analyzed spatial data and developed a StoryMap to present my findings and offer planning recommendations aimed at improving safety on vulnerable intersections, especially around schools, in the study area.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducted a detailed analysis of bicycle safety in selected risk zones within Midtown and Downtown Atlanta.

  • Utilized ArcGIS Pro to visualize and interpret spatial data related to bicycle accidents, infrastructure, and traffic patterns.

  • Developed a StoryMap to effectively communicate the study's findings and planning recommendations.

Analysis and Recommendations:

Through my analysis, I identified key factors contributing to bicycle accidents in the study area, including:

  • Intersection Design: Evaluated intersection layouts and identified areas with high potential for bicycle-vehicle conflicts.

  • Infrastructure Deficiencies: Assessed the presence of bicycle lanes, signage, and other safety measures within the study zones.

  • Traffic Patterns: Analyzed traffic volume and flow to understand potential conflicts between bicycles and motor vehicles.

I formulated planning recommendations aimed at enhancing safety for bicyclists at vulnerable intersections, including:

  • Improved Infrastructure: Proposing the addition of dedicated bicycle lanes, signage, and signals to enhance visibility and guide traffic flow.

  • Traffic Calming Measures: Recommending the implementation of traffic calming measures such as speed humps and roundabouts to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for all road users.

  • Educational Campaigns: Suggesting the development of educational campaigns to raise awareness among cyclists and motorists about safe practices and sharing the road.
